Action and science fiction are combined in this American series about Colonel Steve Austin—a former astronaut. Lee Majors plays the role of Austin, who gained his superhuman strength from bionic implants. OSI (Office of Scientific Intelligence), a fictional government agency hires him. Six Million Dollar Man is adapted from Martin Caidin’s Cyborg (working title during pre-production stages). After three TV pilot movies all were broadcast in 1973, the series aired from 1974 to 1978 on ABC. It lasted for five seasons. It made Steve Austin a popular 70s pop culture icon. The Six Million Dollar Man’s spin-off was The Bionic Woman, which was about the character named Jaime Sommers (Lindsay Wagner) and ran from 1976 to 1978.
Colonel Steve Austin, a NASA astronaut, becomes extremely injured when a prototype lifting body air vessel crashed. He is then revived and re-made through a procedure that costs 6 Million USD (back then; presently equal to about 34 Million USD). His left eye, his right arm, and both of his legs are replaced with bionic implants that enhance his vision, strength, and speed beyond normal human levels. He uses his new abilities while working for OSI (really existed under the wings of the CIA back in the 70s) as one of its secret agents.
