The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson

The very first time that Johnny Carson walked out from behind the curtain to host The Tonight Show it was October 1, 1962. The hot young star was replacing Jack Paar, who earlier had himself replaced Steve Allen. The audience numbered about 8 million when the Norfolk Nebraska native began and it continued to grow in size over the thirty years that Carson hosted the show.

By the time that the Carson show ended in 1992 he had been part of creating a whole new era of television and setting late night television on its ear.
